In this teacher’s guide, I share a combination of reading and writing lessons, non-fiction articles related to the events of Behind the Waterline, and generative writing prompts. This guide is designed for grades 9 – 12 with tips for leveling up for undergraduate students or down to middle school.
Join me for a generative writing exercise, designed as the first in a series of on-demand training for teachers in collaboration with Houston’s Writers in the Schools. In this lesson, participants will create the first draft of a short short story, using a framework inspired by Kurt Vonnegut and Mary Robinette Kowal. Participants will also see the first draft of “The Scent of Lavender” unfold. After participating in the lesson, click on The Bayou Review thumbnail to read the final draft of the story.
